I
love to paint pictures celebrating popular culture and consider
myself a
bit of a media junky. I'm addicted to biographies, because I'm
interested in how
people become wildly successful despite often crazy upbringings
and/or
adverse circumstances. But hey, I also like to paint regular
folks.
I am fascinated
by the
joyful, nonjudgmental world children inhabit, which has inspired
me to
create
many pictures for children's books. Born in rainy Vancouver,
Canada, I
moved
to NY in 1991 to study illustration at the School of Visual
Arts. My
home and
studio is now in Park Slope, Brooklyn with my husband Sean
Qualls, who is also an illustrator and our son Isaiah. The raining letters on
my home page are a tribute to
the
city I grew up in.
